The strongest AI workers will not be differentiated only by intelligence. They will understand the sector’s revenue chain, systems, exceptions and definition of acceptable work.

For a while, the AI market seemed to be moving towards one universal assistant—one clever system that could help every company with almost everything.

The market is now taking a more useful direction.

ChipAgents is a good example. It is developing specialised AI agents for semiconductor design, verification and debugging—work that depends on deep technical context, trusted tools and measurable accuracy. The company recently added $60 million to its Series A funding, bringing the round’s total to $131 million.

The lesson is simple: intelligence alone is not enough

A valuable AI worker must understand five things:

The sector. It must speak the language of the industry.

The revenue chain. It should know how an enquiry becomes an order, delivery, invoice and payment.

The systems. It must work across the CRM, finance, communication and operational platforms already in use.

The exceptions. It should recognise when the normal process no longer applies.

The standard of acceptable work. Its output must be checked against clear evidence, business rules and human expectations.

Verification matters because a confident answer is not necessarily a correct or commercially safe one. The stronger the worker becomes, the more important its boundaries, tests and approval points become.

This creates a promising opportunity for mid-market businesses in UK and climes. Professional services firms can improve enquiry handling, proposals and collections. Recruitment companies can strengthen follow-up and CRM accuracy. Property businesses can coordinate enquiries and service updates. Engineering companies can connect technical qualification, quotation, delivery and payment.

Consider an engineering company. A vertical AI workforce could receive an enquiry, gather technical details, identify missing information, prepare the CRM record, support quotation, maintain follow-up and escalate unusual requests to an experienced employee.

That is far more useful than a generic chatbot.

The best approach is to validate one revenue workflow before building a large workforce. Start with a costly delay or repeated handover. Measure the current result. Define the exceptions. Then test one specialised worker.
