WhatsApp Business API in Nigeria: Setup, Pricing and Providers

How the WhatsApp Business API works for Nigerian firms in 2026: Meta's per-message rates after the October change, verification, messaging limits, providers and CRM connections.

WhatsApp Business API in Nigeria: Setup, Pricing and Providers

In late August 2026, a headline raced through Nigerian group chats: WhatsApp was about to charge Nigerians ₦14 per message. Fact-checkers at Dubawa rated the claim misleading. Personal chats were never affected.

The charge applied to firms on the WhatsApp Business API Nigeria businesses use to message customers at scale.

The panic still told a truth. Millions of Nigerians now expect to buy, complain and confirm payments on WhatsApp. For the firms on the other end, how the platform charges has become a line in the budget.

This guide explains how the WhatsApp Business API Nigeria setup works in 2026. It covers approval, current Meta pricing, providers and how to connect it to a CRM.

Key takeaways

  • The API is for businesses that need several agents, automation or CRM integration. The free WhatsApp Business app suits a single phone.
  • Meta charges per delivered message, by category and by the customer’s country code.
  • From 1 October 2026, replies inside the 24-hour service window also carry a charge.
  • New business portfolios start with a limit of 250 business-initiated messages per day until they verify or scale.
  • Most setup problems come from phone numbers, unverified businesses and miscategorised templates.

What is the WhatsApp Business API, and who needs it?

Meta now calls it the WhatsApp Business Platform. It lets software, rather than a single phone, send and receive WhatsApp messages for your business.

That matters once conversations outgrow one device. A Lagos fashion store with three sales staff cannot share one phone. A Port Harcourt logistics firm cannot type every delivery update by hand.

The demand is real. In PwC’s 2024 MSME survey, WhatsApp Business was the most-cited marketing channel among Nigerian small businesses, at 23%.

If you have one person answering a few dozen chats a day, the free app is fine. If you need shared inboxes, automated notifications or a CRM record of every chat, you need the API.

How does Meta charge for WhatsApp messages in 2026?

Meta moved to per-message pricing on 1 July 2025. Meta charges template messages on delivery. The rate depends on the template category, volume tier and the recipient’s country calling code.

There are three template categories: marketing, utility and authentication. Utility covers things like order confirmations and delivery updates. Authentication covers one-time passcodes.

The rules around free messages changed on 1 October 2026. Meta’s pricing notice says service messages and utility replies inside the 24-hour window became chargeable. Service messages now cost the same as utility messages in each market, with no volume discounts.

One exception remains. Customers who arrive through a Click to WhatsApp ad or a Facebook Page button open a 72-hour window. Meta does not charge for delivery inside it.

How much does the WhatsApp Business API cost in Nigeria?

Meta’s own pricing pages load country rates as downloadable rate cards, which we could not read directly. Two independent compilations of Meta’s US dollar card list the same Nigeria rates from 1 October 2026.

Message typeUSD per delivered messageIndicative naira*
Marketing template$0.0516about ₦68.78
Utility template$0.0067about ₦8.93
Authentication template$0.0067about ₦8.93
Service message (from 1 Oct 2026)$0.0067about ₦8.93

Rates as compiled by ChatMaxima and FlowCall. *Converted at ₦1,332.99 to the dollar, the official close on 12 October 2026 reported by Nairametrics.

A caution on numbers. Other reports cited higher Nigeria figures, around $0.0101 for utility and $0.062 for marketing.

Dubawa’s ₦14 figure came from those rates. Check the live rate card in WhatsApp Manager or with your provider before you budget.

Billing is in foreign currency. Meta publishes rate cards in 16 currencies, and the naira is not one of them.

What would a typical Nigerian business pay each month?

Take an illustrative online store in Lagos using the rates above. Each month it sends 3,000 order and delivery updates, 2,000 promotional messages and 5,000 replies to customer questions.

  • 3,000 utility messages at $0.0067: $20.10.
  • 2,000 marketing messages at $0.0516: $103.20.
  • 5,000 service replies at $0.0067: $33.50.

That totals $156.80 a month, about ₦209,000 at the October rate. Marketing makes up two-thirds of the bill with a fifth of the volume.

Techpoint reports that each phone number gets 1,000 free service messages a month. Meta’s notice that we read did not mention this allowance, so confirm it with your provider.

Should you start with the app and move to the API later?

Many Nigerian firms do exactly that, and it is a reasonable path. The free app teaches you what customers ask, when they message and which replies close sales.

The trigger to move is usually one of three things.

  • More than one person needs to answer chats.
  • You want automatic order or payment updates.
  • Management wants every conversation logged against a customer in the CRM.

Plan the move rather than drifting into it. A move to the WhatsApp Business API Nigeria customers already message needs three early choices: a number, a provider and a template set. Firms that switch mid-campaign often lose chats in the gap.

What does the WhatsApp Business API Nigeria setup process involve?

The steps are the same everywhere, but local paperwork can slow them down.

  1. Create a Meta business portfolio using your registered company name, as it appears on CAC documents.
  2. Verify the business. Meta checks your details against your company documents and website.
  3. Choose a phone number that can receive a verification call. HubSpot and Zoho both require one that is not already on the WhatsApp Business app.
  4. Set a display name that matches your brand and website.
  5. Add a payment method so Meta can bill chargeable messages.
  6. Submit message templates for review before sending anything outside the service window.

Verification affects how fast you can grow.

Meta’s messaging limits start new portfolios at 250 business-initiated messages in a rolling day. Verifying the business is one way to reach 2,000. Higher limits of 10,000, 100,000 and unlimited follow automatically with good quality and steady usage.

What is a Business Solution Provider, and do you need one?

A Business Solution Provider, or BSP, is a company Meta approves to connect businesses to the platform. Many add an inbox, chatbot tools or CRM connectors on top.

You can connect directly through Meta’s Cloud API if you have developers. Most SMEs use a BSP or a CRM with built-in WhatsApp because it saves build time.

Providers price differently.

Techpoint reports that BSPs may add between $0.003 and $0.010 or more per message to Meta’s rate. Others charge a monthly platform fee instead. Ask every provider for a full cost per 1,000 messages, by category.

How does the API connect to a CRM?

This is where the API starts paying for itself. Every chat lands on a customer record, with the sales owner, order history and next step in view.

Zoho CRM supports WhatsApp in all paid editions. It needs a verified business and an unused number, and Zoho says migrating existing numbers is not yet supported. Approved templates can then run inside workflows and blueprints.

HubSpot connects WhatsApp to its conversations inbox on Professional or Enterprise Marketing or Service Hub. It caps template messages at 1,000 a month across connected accounts.

For more complex routing, an automation layer can sit between WhatsApp and the CRM. Riophany builds these WhatsApp and CRM automations for firms in Nigeria and Ghana. Some include AI agents that hand over to people.

What are the most common setup mistakes?

Most of the trouble is avoidable.

  • Using the owner’s personal number. CRM integrations usually need a number free of other WhatsApp accounts. Use a dedicated business line.
  • Mismatched business details. A trading name on the website and a different CAC name slows verification.
  • Dressing marketing as utility. Meta’s template guidance warns that category affects pricing. Meta may also pause templates that draw poor feedback.
  • Blasting cold lists. Nigeria’s data law requires a lawful basis, and consent is the safest one for promotions. Unhappy recipients also report spam, which lowers quality ratings.
  • No owner for the inbox. Automation answers the easy questions. Someone still needs to own the rest.

Consent deserves its own note. Section 25 of the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 lists consent among the lawful bases for processing. Record when and how each customer opted in.

Ads are the other link in the chain. Our piece on what happens after an ad brings a customer shows how slow replies waste paid traffic. Click to WhatsApp ads also open Meta’s free 72-hour window.

Is the WhatsApp Business API Nigeria businesses use worth the cost?

For most growing firms, yes, if the messages carry value. An order update that prevents a “where is my package?” call costs under ₦9 at the rates above.

The expensive habit is marketing volume without targeting. At about ₦69 a message, a careless broadcast to 10,000 people costs nearly ₦690,000.

The ₦14 panic faded within days. The underlying shift did not. WhatsApp has become a paid business channel in Nigeria, and the firms that measure each message will spend least.
