On a Saturday on Oxford Street in Osu, a shopper pays for a dress with a MoMo prompt on her phone. She enters her PIN, the vendor hears the confirmation, and the sale is done in seconds. Then the relationship usually ends there.
Marketing automation Ghana businesses can actually use starts in that gap. The payment proves who the customer is and what she bought.
An automated journey can turn it into a receipt, a thank-you, a restock alert and, months later, a reason to come back. This guide covers which channels work in Ghana, what they cost, what the law requires, and what to automate first.
Key takeaways
- Most marketing automation Ghana SMEs need runs on WhatsApp, SMS and email, triggered by real customer actions rather than newsletters.
- Mobile money is the strongest trigger. Bank of Ghana data shows GHS492.9 billion in MoMo transactions in June 2026 alone.
- Local SMS can cost less per message than a WhatsApp marketing template. Use each channel for what it does best.
- Ghana’s Data Protection Act requires prior written consent for direct marketing, and the Data Protection Commission began spot checks in October 2026.
- Automate receipts and follow-ups first. Promotional broadcasts come last.
What is marketing automation for a Ghanaian SME?
Strip away the jargon and it is simple. Software sends the right message when a customer does something, without a staff member remembering to send it.
The trigger might be a MoMo payment, a web form, a WhatsApp enquiry or a quiet month since the last order. The message might be a receipt, a reminder, a review request or an offer. A CRM sits in the middle and keeps the history.
The audience is mostly small firms. The Ghana Statistical Service counted 1.87 million business establishments in its 2024 survey, and 90.4% were micro-businesses, Graphic Online reported. For them, marketing automation Ghana tools must be cheap, mobile-first and quick to set up.
Why is mobile money the best trigger in Ghana?
Because it is where the customer already acts. That makes MoMo the natural starting point for marketing automation Ghana projects.
Bank of Ghana figures, reported by the Ghana News Agency, show 954 million mobile money transactions worth GHS492.9 billion in June 2026. Active accounts stood at 26.4 million.
Businesses are catching up unevenly. The same GSS survey found 37.2% of businesses used digital payments nationally. Greater Accra led at 50.9%.
A payment gateway turns each MoMo payment into a data event. Paystack, for example, supports MTN, AirtelTigo and Telecel mobile money in Ghana. Its webhooks send a charge.success event to your system the moment a payment clears.
That event can start a journey. The CRM matches the phone number to a customer, logs the order, and queues the next message.
Which channels work best for marketing automation Ghana teams?
Each channel has a job. The mistake is using one channel for everything.
WhatsApp suits conversations, receipts and order updates. Meta places Ghana in its “Rest of Africa” pricing group. From 1 October 2026, Meta also charges for service messages at the utility rate, according to its non-template message rules.
SMS reaches every phone, including feature phones, and needs no app. Local gateways sell it in cedis. Hubtel lists pay-as-you-go SMS at GHS0.03 per message to all local networks, with bundle rates falling lower.
Email costs least at volume and suits B2B firms, schools and professional services. Zoho Campaigns offers a free plan for up to 2,000 contacts and 6,000 emails a month, with SMS as a paid add-on.

What does each channel cost per message?
The table converts dollar prices at GHS11.71 to the dollar, the Bank of Ghana interbank selling rate on 14 October 2026, as ModernGhana reported. WhatsApp rates come from a FlowCall summary of Meta’s October 2026 rate card. Check Meta’s own card before you budget.
| Message type (as of October 2026) | List price | Approx. cedis |
|---|---|---|
| WhatsApp marketing template, Rest of Africa | $0.0225 | GHS0.26 |
| WhatsApp utility or service message, Rest of Africa | $0.004 | GHS0.05 |
| Hubtel SMS, pay-as-you-go | GHS0.03 | GHS0.03 |
| Zoho Campaigns email, free plan | $0 up to 6,000 a month | GHS0 |
The comparison should shape how marketing automation Ghana budgets get split. A WhatsApp marketing template costs nearly nine times as much as a local SMS. So a promotion to 10,000 customers runs to about GHS2,600 on WhatsApp and about GHS300 by SMS, before platform fees.
That does not make SMS better. WhatsApp carries images, buttons and replies, and a conversation can close a sale. But it does mean blasting every offer on WhatsApp is the expensive habit, not the default.
How do you stay within Ghana’s Data Protection Act?
Consent is the legal foundation of any marketing automation Ghana project.
Section 40 of the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) requires “prior written consent of the data subject” before personal data is used for direct marketing. That reading comes from the Ghana chapter of Chambers’ Advertising and Marketing 2025 guide.
Two other laws apply to electronic messages. The same chapter says section 50 of the Electronic Transactions Act, 2008 (Act 772) bans unsolicited electronic communication to consumers without prior consent. Commercial messages must also offer a way to cancel.
Registration matters too. Act 843 requires data controllers to register with the Data Protection Commission and renew every two years, according to a Ghana factsheet from dataprotection.africa. We could not confirm current registration fees online, so check them with the Commission directly.
Enforcement has started. The Commission began spot checks on 5 October 2026, targeting unregistered organisations. Executive Director Dr Arnold Kavaarpuo said the Commission would no longer rely only on persuasion, GNA reported.
WhatsApp adds its own rule. Its Business Messaging Policy requires opt-in before a business sends messages, and businesses must honour opt-out requests.
In practice, store consent per channel in your CRM, with the date and the wording the customer saw. A tick box at checkout or a keyword such as “JOIN” on WhatsApp gives you a record. A phone number taken from a MoMo payment does not.
What should you automate first?
Start with messages customers expect and welcome. They carry less legal risk, cost less, and build the habit of reading your messages. A sensible marketing automation Ghana sequence looks like this:
- Payment receipts. A WhatsApp or SMS confirmation the moment a MoMo or card payment clears.
- Order and delivery updates. Dispatch, rider on the way, delivered.
- Abandoned enquiries. A follow-up when a WhatsApp enquiry goes quiet for a few hours, sent while the 24-hour service window is still open.
- Review and referral requests. A short message a few days after delivery.
- Win-back offers. Only to customers who opted in to marketing, after a set period without an order.
Each step needs the CRM behind it. Our piece on what happens after an ad brings a customer explains why the follow-up usually decides the sale.

What do MoMo-triggered journeys look like in Accra?
Two illustrative examples show the pattern. Neither describes a real client.
Illustrative example: an Osu fashion boutique.
A customer pays by MoMo through a payment link. The webhook logs the sale in the CRM and sends a WhatsApp receipt with care instructions. Three weeks later, if she opted in, she gets an SMS when new stock in her size arrives.
Illustrative example: a digital lender in Accra.
A borrower repays a loan instalment by MoMo. The system sends an instant WhatsApp confirmation and updates the balance. Three days before the next instalment, an SMS reminder goes out, because reminders work on any phone.
In both cases, the same customer record drives every message. That is what separates marketing automation from a bulk SMS account.
Which tools are available in Ghana?
A typical marketing automation Ghana stack combines a local layer with a global one. Local gateways such as Hubtel handle SMS in cedis and connect to local networks. Paystack handles card and MoMo payments.
The CRM and automation layer is usually global: Zoho, HubSpot or Salesforce, linked to a WhatsApp Business Platform provider. Zoho Books also works with Paystack in Ghana through its Paystack extension, which marks invoices as paid automatically.
At Riophany, we build these links between payment events, CRM records and messaging channels. Our automation services cover WhatsApp, SMS and email journeys for firms in Ghana and Nigeria.
How do you measure marketing automation Ghana results?
Track outcomes, not message counts. Five numbers tell you most of what you need:
- Repeat purchase rate: the share of customers who buy again within 90 days.
- Revenue per message: sales attributed to a journey, divided by messages sent.
- Opt-out rate: a rising figure means messages feel like spam.
- Delivery rate by channel and network: SMS delivery can vary across MTN, Telecel and AirtelTigo.
- Cost per conversation: especially on WhatsApp, now that service messages carry a fee.
Review them monthly. Cut any journey that costs more than it returns.
Where marketing automation Ghana firms go next
Ghana already has the hard part. Customers pay digitally, carry phones everywhere and answer messages. What most businesses lack is the record that connects a payment to a person.
The MoMo prompt on Oxford Street already captured that connection. The question is whether anyone in the business writes it down.
Frequently asked questions
Is WhatsApp or SMS cheaper for marketing in Ghana?
SMS is usually cheaper per message. Hubtel lists GHS0.03 per local SMS, while a WhatsApp marketing template in Meta’s Rest of Africa group costs $0.0225, about GHS0.26 at mid-October 2026 rates.
Do I need consent to send marketing messages in Ghana?
Yes. Act 843 requires prior written consent for direct marketing, and the Electronic Transactions Act bans unsolicited electronic messages without consent. WhatsApp also requires opt-in.
Do I need to register with Ghana’s Data Protection Commission?
If you process personal data as a data controller, yes. Registration must be renewed every two years, and the Commission began spot checks on unregistered organisations in October 2026.
Can a mobile money payment trigger an automated message?
Yes. Payment gateways such as Paystack send a webhook when a MoMo payment succeeds. Your CRM can use it to send a receipt and start a follow-up journey.
What should a small business automate first?
Payment receipts and delivery updates. Customers expect them, they carry little legal risk, and they build trust before you send any promotions.
